Construction Safety Tips

Here are some quick and easy construction safety tips that will protect the well-being of yourself and your employees:

Understanding fall hazards

Before they even begin on the job, all construction workers should locate and identify all fall hazards on the work site. This includes double checking any fall protection equipment that has been installed. Workers should always make sure that the lifeline in their system is short enough to prevent him or her from hitting the ground in case of a fall.

Wear the right equipment

While this may seem obvious, some seasoned construction workers don’t believe that they have to follow these protocols. Always wear eye protection, a helmet, steel-toed shoes, and additional protection if you are going to be handling electricity. Don’t forget your ears, especially if you are working with equipment that is loud or causes vibration. Proper equipment is meant for your safety, so please follow it!

Follow your gut

If something seems off, don’t hesitate to follow your gut and speak to your supervisor. For example, you don’t want to go up on an unsupported scaffold, work during a storm, or use old tools.

Stay mobile

Always, always move around as you work. You don’t want to fall due to overextending or reaching. If you cannot reach something, figure out an alternative way to get the job done. Also, keep your surroundings in mind and be extra cautious around power lines, underground utilities, and low overhangs.

Never work alone

Always have company, even if it is someone else on your worksite completing another project. Always have a buddy on hand that can call for help in an emergency– not only for your protection, but for theirs as well!
